Energy Bar Project

Lab Write-Up
Every day for 6 days I had an energy bar right before I had school basketball. I always had it at the same time before practice (3:00). The project took longer then I expected because I always had to keep things consistent. What time of day it was at, always before my school basketball practices. Otherwise my results would have an outlier. I believe the energy bar that tastes the best will be the least effective on you.
The first day of my experiment I had a chocolate peanut butter Quaker bar. It’s more of a protein bar then an energy bar. I think it was one of the least effective bars on me. I was a little tired that Tuesday after school, and kind of hungry. After I ate the 45 calories from fat bar I felt like it filled me up. The bar tasted to me like peanut butter a little dab of chocolate here and there but also like a whole bunch of cardboard. That day practice was pretty easy we ran a lot though. It gave me energy through ¼ of practice. Then the effects of the bar started to wear off and I got hungry again. Therefore I believe I should a different type of bar before practice because it didn’t give me that much energy.
Day 2 I had the Chex Mix Chocolate Chunk protein bar. Let me tell you this bar did pretty much nothing for me. I was really tired and truly hungry. The bar barely filled me up I went from being a really hungry – to only kind of hungry. But I felt like the bar slowed me down. The bar tasted ok. It was a little too chocolately. It was over powering and that’s all I could taste.
On the 3rd day of my experiment I had a Pure Protein chocolate peanut butter bar. I remember that day quite well because I didn’t have that great a school day that day. I was barely hungry. Also I was feeling tremendously tired. The bar tasted pretty good for a protein bar. Usually they are really good for you and have a horrible taste. But this one came in an all in 1 package (taste and energy). It tasted pretty good but the peanut butter had a weird texture. Almost like play dough covered by a shell of chocolate. But it gave me lots of energy I was pretty hungry before I ate the bar then I was so full! So I believe this would be a great choice bar to eat before practice.
(Day 4) I had no energy bar on this day. On a regular basis this is what I’m like before practice. I’m a little tired after school and a slightly hungry. Nothing special went on during the day. So this is a regular basis for me.
On the 5th day of my experiment I had a Promax Double Fudge Brownie Bar. It’s an energy bar. That day I was extremely hungry after a long day of school. In addition I was literally barely tired at all. The bar tasted pretty good. Almost like the pure protein chocolate peanut butter bar. It has the same texture except all chocolate. It was a delicious.
On the last day of my experiment I had a Supreme Protein Peanut Butter Crunch Bar.  I was quite hungry that day, also fairly tired. But I felt like, this bar was the best it gave me the most energy, and I felt like it gave me a fair amount of energy.  Also the bar tasted great almost like a Reese’s peanut cup. I loved it. Overall I thought this was the best bar for me.

Conclusions: Which energy bar was best?
Out of all the 5 energy bars I had the Supreme Protein peanut butter crunch energy bar was the best. It had lots of good qualities. The taste, the things that made it a quality energy bar.
It had an amazing taste, unlike some of the other energy bars I had. This energy bar had a good texture. It was almost like a Twix candy bar texture, smooth outside, creamy inside, with a cookie crunch. It also had a magnificent taste. To me it tasted like a Reese’s peanut butter cup. Usually energy bars have a bad taste and a weird texture. I’m glad this energy bar company’s maker decided to shake things up.
What also made this a very excellent energy bar are the ingredients. Milk protein, which consists of 3 % of your daily protein. Soy lecithin, which is a byproduct of soybeans. It’s packed with choline, which is found in eggs. Choline boots brain development and prevents heart disease, lowers cholesterol, and helps treat dementia.        Also it has concentrate which reduces your water weight. There is hydrolyzed collagen in it. This is a form a gelatin. What this does for your body is helps weight loss and reduces your chance of getting arthritis, it might help your bones and joints get stronger, and to top it all off,  it might shorten recovery for sports-related injury. Maltitol is another ingredient in this energy bar. Maltitol is is a sugar alcohol. It doesn’t really have any effects as it’s a sugar substitute. It tastes very much like regular sugar but has fewer calories. Maltidextrin is another ingredient in this energy bar. I think this was a very smart ingredient to put into the energy bar because it makes you feel full, decreasing the chance of overeating.
The nutrition facts. The Supreme Protein peanut butter crunch bar had 400 calories in it, 175 being calories From fat. It had 30% of your daily requirements of protein, but only 12% of daily sodium. It had 65mg of potassium, but only 10g of sugar. This bar had lots of vitamins and minerals such as (Vitamin A, C, E, B6, B12, Calcium, Iron, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Folate, Biotin, Pantothenic Acid, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Zinc, Selenium, Copper, and Manganese. The Surpreme Protien bar contained more vitamins and minerals in it than any other energy bar in my project.
Overall, I believe this was the best energy bar I ever had. I will continue to eat this bar before games and practices because it seems to offer the whole package- taste and energy. It has everything I want in an energy bar. Therefore, this is the energy bar for me.

Goals for next project:

-I would like to get my project done on time.

-On my narrative I want my paragraphs to be organized better.

- Have more descriptive words in all my writing.

Narrative
Over 6 basketball practices I evaluated 5 energy bars. On one day I ate nothing to establish my baseline. Each day at 3:00 p.m. I ate my energy bar prior to practice. The way I controlled the external variables was to eat the bar at the same time, and always ate the whole bar. I always made sure to have a regular day at school by getting enough sleep, and eating a normal amount. This experiment took longer than I expected because I had to keep the variables consistent. It took me about a month and a half longer to complete this project because I had to keep the variables consistent. My hypothesis was that the energy bar that tasted the best would be the least effective.
I judged each bar by rating it on a scale of 1-10. I rated the taste, how much energy I felt I got, and how much it relieved my hunger. On day 1 I had a Chocolate Peanut butter bar made by Quaker. It gave me a 4 on taste, 4 on energy, and 4 on how much it relieved my hunger. On the second day I had a Chocolate Chunk Chex Mix bar. It gave me a 5 for taste, 2 on energy, and 3 for how much it relieved my hunger. On the third day of my experiment I had a Pure Protein Chocolate Peanut Butter energy bar.  It gave me a 7 for taste, 5 on energy, and 9 for how much it relieved my hunger. On the fourth day I had no energy bar. This was my baseline. I was a little hungry (3) and kind of tired (4). For the fifth day of my experiment I had a Promax Double Fudge Brownie energy bar. It gave it an 8 for taste, 1 on energy, and 9 for how much it relieved my hunger. On the final day of my experiment I had a Supreme Protein Peanut Butter Crunch bar. It gave it a 10 for taste, 6 on energy, and 9 for how much it relieved my hunger.
What I would do differently is try to get my writing work done faster. Also try to get other work done faster so I didn’t have to stay after school and miss the first part of practice. Which if I missed the first part of practice I couldn’t do a recording of data for the day because it wouldn’t be consistent.  Overall the Supreme Protein Peanut Butter Crunch bar was the best. It had the highest rating in all categories. My hypothesis was not correct though. This energy bar had the best taste to me, and gave me the most energy.
